I'm not a fan of all this 'social networking' type business to be honest, it seems to me that it is generally the domain of 14 year olds or those that require constant recognition that they are of some worth through some form of repeated affirmation of their existence by others.... [sorry, starting to sound like a rant - not intended as such, and I could easlily be wrong....]
.... however, how useful are such things likely to be in terms of finding out bits and pieces whilst at Glastonbury (eg. unexpected appearances etc)?
Worth bothering or not?

Yeah I'd say so. There's a huge Glasto community on Twitter and have heard some great camping advice, lineup info and just general festival banter on there, plus there's a Twitter meet up too, well worth checking out if you have a few spare minutes.
EDIT:
Oh sorry didn't think you mean actually at the festival. Don't bother whilst at Glastonbury, focus on where you are instead!

Twitter is nonsense and exactly what you said, a tool for constant ego masturbation..
All you really need is Glasto Nav (if they are doing it again this year)
It's a phone download through Orange(even if you aren't on their network)
It will give you updated performer info and special guest news across the weekend.
