It's probably quite a risky thing to do to book a specific train - you need an open ended return, which I know is more expensive, but there is no way of second guessing if you'll make it.  Is it from Castle Cary or BTM?

I know, i couldnt resist, how far is the train station away and how do you aim to get there? apparently the west car parks take ages to leave at that time, so i would advise to get there a good few hours before the actual journey, the increase in train price to the one you've booked could be hundreds in seriousness.

is there a way of cancelling your ticket or exchanging it for an open one? I fear that the specific time one will be a waste of cash.

Ive done the busses once and it was a nightmare getting back to south wales in the morning, and loads of our group didnt make it to the exact bus so had to make their own way back, cost them a fortune in train fares/busses/etc.

I always book reserved seating on trains if going to london, if im early they want to charge about a ton so i wouldnt risk it to be honest.

Hope it works out for you mate.

Ok, well one of the main things to remember is that as with driving, you have to leave the festival site by bus.  So you're subjected to the same traffic as if you were driving.  Then when you get to Castle Cary, other people waiting for the train will be queuing - the queue can be long and take hours to get from the back to the front.  Obviously, the chances of the queue being big at the station and the traffic upon leaving the site, will be reduced if you get there early enough, although how early is your call.  How much do you want to ensure you get that train?  the first buses leave the site to the station at 6am.

Alot of the above is way off the mark, i've trained it for years. The site to Castle Cary bus is usually a breeze trafficwise, it follows a completely separate route to those exiting the car park. The issue is around how big the queue to get on the bus is, in 2007 when it rained and rained and rained it was epic and took 1hr +, in other years it's taken 10mins.

Ticket wise I always get a York to Castle Cary open return but specify times when booking. Check your return ticket unless you've specifically bought two singles it's more than likely you have bought some kind of open return, allbeit with saver type restrictions.

Secondly, the staff at CC seem unconcerned with the timing of trains. I've never got the correct train from CC, as long as you have a valid ticket for a journey on that day you'll be fine so get to CC early if you know you need to be on a train at Bristol for a specific time.

Thirdly on the way back at CC make sure you get on the right platform, the crowds will be going to London the trains to Bristol, Taunton etc always seem to be less full.
