michael macintyre is just not funny.
i can't watch anything with him on it, he's a dick.

he can't even finish a sentence because he can't stop laughing at his own jokes.

i have a ridiculous amount of hatred for him.

i'm not a violent person but he is a man with an extremely punchable face as well as the not being funniness.

Steve Hughes (used to be a drummer for Mortal Sin - Heavy metal band) but also very funny imo.
Stephen K Amos.
Stewart Francis.

Lol just realised I like comedians all starting with S.

But like I think they are realistic size to be on the list.

Some comedians mentioned are too big to be there in my opinion.

How many are bigger than Simon Amstell? And I mean, indisputedly bigger, not people as famous as him who you simply like more.

Nobody is too big to do a comedy set at R&L.

For the minority of those that disagree who are able to count to five, name five comedians bigger than any of Jupitus, Amstell and McIntyre when they did their sets. Off the top of my head I can only think of two who are undeniably bigger

Calm down dear! Clearly there are alot of comedians too big for Reading/Leeds. The organisers themselvedss have admitted that they won't book huge name comedians. If you look at the likes of Lattitude the comparrison is huge with the comedians that they book.

Yeah in the past there have been some big names playing but you'll only get perhaps one a year ands they're never really that big.

Hes touring all around the festival and Has a date on the Saturday but not Friday Sunday. Would be nice to see Andy live

completely wrong

while I agree Amsell is a big coup hes not a big stand up act, he got big by presenting TV and hosting buzzcocks. His stand up routine is hardly well known

Jupitus wasnt supposed to be a "propper" set. It was supposed to be him just doing improv for a bit thus how they got him signed

McIntyre got big around October November time. He wasnt big around the time of the festival. Out of the 3  headliners last year McIntyre easily got the smallest crowd.

People get mixed up with R&L having big comedy acts but when you actually look at it most of them didnt get big until after their festival apperance.

Peter Kay - 2001 - didnt get big until 2002ish
Sean Lock - 2004 - Didnt get to "DVD" status untill 2007
Russel Brand - 2005 - Didnt get big until 2007
Alan Carr - 2006 - Didnt get big untill after the festival
Brendon Burns, Micheal McIntyre - Both didnt get big until after the festival

Remember, up to 2005, Mean Fiddler didnt think the comedians wasnt big enough to headline on their own that they had Hugh Lennon as a joint headliner every year

Okay, if we go by that logic...

here's six:

bill bailey - famous for the same thing two of the above three are.
billy connolly - how did he slip my mind?
peter kay - he's just a fat man with a northern accent. And he's an actor.
russell brand - he failed at being a comedian, and broke through by presenting music shows and big brother. his two most notable attempts at humour got him fired (September 12th 2001 and phoning up the grandad of some whore he shagged years previously)
frankie boyle - decent argument, in 2008 I suppose so, but is Mock the Week really bigger than Buzzcocks has been?
jimmy carr - fair enough

I'm shite!

I'll let you off :D

Back to the more constructively made points:

Can't argue with either of those points, although McIntyre was still "big", and the other two were big coups there for the purposes of comedy.

Phoenix Nights was huge in early 2001.
Brand is neither funny, nor otherwise talented, nor worthy of a share of the world's oxygen. He was however getting pretty big by that stage.
McIntyre I just disagree with. Yes, he's bigger now, but he was pretty recognisable by that stage.

I do take your point, that while these people were big, they weren't huge when they did Reading. My point is that the comedy tent can attract names such as Amstell and Jupitus, not because it's a big enough platform for them, but because they're willing to "take a step down" for the things that go along with that set. I'd say that holds especially true for the likes of Mark Watson.
