It will be my 2nd time at Beni this year, and im trying to get organised as last year was a bit of a disaster getting from A to B. We are flying with Ryanair to Barcelona and need some advice on taking tents. Last year we had a dome tent and planned to take it as hand luggage, but were told after we had checked our bags that we couldnt do this as the poles had to be checked in. What is everyones experience of flying with tents? I am tempted to buy a pop up tent to save poles etc but would I be able to check this in? Or can you take them as hand luggage? Tried to ring Ryanair but they are useless! Any help would be much appreciated! ROLL ON BENI!!!

hi there. also my second time at beni this year, though im going in luxury and staying in a hotel this year :P i flew with BA and Iberia (a spanish airline) last year and we put the tent in our bags and checked them intot he hold. nothing was said about them being there and id e-mailed to ask them about it before we flew. i cn not speak for ryanair obv but BA were fine as long as they werent on as hand lugaage, as poles are seen as an offensive weapon!!

Can not wait for Beni :( !!!!!!!!!

I'm flyinf with RyanAir this year to Rock Am Ring (In 4 hours!!!!) just packed my bag, put the tent, sleeping bag, air matress and pump in my rucksack, which is going in the hold, along with a couple of pairs of jeans and hoodies, t-shirts are going in the hand luggage (which can be up to 10kg!) seems to work well, I've weighed my bag and it's just under 15kg, hopefully it's accurate :P

I'm going with my boyfriend & another couple, so we're checking in the tent, they're checking in a holdall with the sleeping bags / mats etc & then we've got 1 piece of check-in luggage per couple & hand luggage. I figure we won't need much stuff, seeing as dresses & bikinis take up so little room.

Did you find that it got cold in the evenings or does it stay humid? This is our 1st Beni & I don't want to freeze at night if the temperature drops off.

nah its not cold at all. your not sleeping at night for starters really cause of the festival time. on the first night i was frezzing but i think that was just because of the change. every night after i was roasting!! and i mean properly boiling.

Thanks people, think I am taking a pop up tent which is in a big disc rather than a bag so will prob have a few probs fitting it into my rucksack but I will prob attach it and hope im not over 15kgs!! With regards to the weather, I found it to be pleasant at night, I took a sleeping bag anyway coz im generally a cold person but it was more used for comfort to lie on than to lie in! Think a blanket would probably work as well. CANT WAIT!!!

Just be careful how you attach it. I had a bog standard rucksac as hand luggage & got told that I couldn't take it onboard 'as it was "TOO STRAPPY"! It had straps for over the shoulders, nothing else?!!? Crabby Check-in b*tch! I figure if you have a load of straps tying it on to another bag it would be "WAY TOO STRAPPY".

Ooooooooh, that woman annoyed me (can you tell)! :P

ha, they clearly have too much time on their hands, bloody Ryanair. Im already annoyed at having to pay a million supplements for the flight as it is, the next thing they will be asking us to do is pay to have a wee on the flight!!!

I'm going to pee in my seat if they start charging to use the bog!

My flights started off at £50ish, but by the time we had luggage & paid £9.50 EACH for paying by CCD (when there's no other way to pay), they ended up at £125, why don't they just tell you that in the 1st place, it wouldn't make you feel that you'd been ripped off quite as much then.

Enough of my Ryanair rant, without them I wouldn't be going to Beni.

the only card ryanair dont charge for is a visa electron card which hardly any1 has.

If you want to avoid the credit card charge, buy vouchers for yourself (there's no charges for these) then use them to buy the flights... takes a little longer but saves a fair bit...

It's all chat, they can't legally charge for it as anywhere that serves sit in food/drink must legally provide adequate toilet facilities free of charge and they wouldn't anyway for a simple reason...

If people have to pay to pee they will not buy drinks in the airport or on the plane which will lose the airports and Ryanair more money than they would make from the toilets.
It's just a PR exercise to get their name in the papers.

Anyway, back to the point, I bought a cheap Tesco Tent for £15 and it weighs just 2.5kilos. It fits in my luggage and when I stick all my stuff in as well I am well under the 15kilo limit. That's the best way to bring the tent.

There are 6 of us going with 3 tents and I am thinking of bringing a big sheet. This will be spread across the middle of the 3 tents to provide us with a shaded area outside the tents. Do you think that will work?

I've seen people have their tent pegs confiscated whilst trying to fly via ryan air, but not the poles.

I've been to festivals in Germany a few times and I usually strap my tent to the front of my military Bergan (rucksack) by just looping the straps on the top flap through my tent bag handles, round the tent ans in to the clips. Then just pull it tight.

I've found that whenever you travwl with a rucksack you have tot ake it to "oversized baggage"... they don;t seem to like the shape of them at the check in desk.

Yeah, thats a good plan. There are 4 of us and I am getting the others to take a 1 man tent each coz last year it was far too hot to sleep next to someone and ended up getting agitated at all the clothes and stuff spread out everywhere! You are best to take a big sheet to shade you, but last year we queued for a bit extra to get the spots under the trees in the shade. I have bought a tent that weighs 5kgs coz I need to take it to Glasto as well so thought I wouldbt be able to get away with a single layer one in case it rains (which it will) at glasto. So will have to make sure I pack lightly if it is going in my rucksack, or take a load of stuff as hand luggage, think you are allowed 10kgs of hand luggage.

I'm doing both Glasto & Benni this year too, and it is not going to rain at Glasto. I'm planning on getting a base tan there, so that I don't need to bare my see-thru skin at Benni.

Was thinking about not bringing a tent at all and maybe bagging myself a cheap one in Barcelona before I head down. Then just fire it into some charity spot on the way home.
Can't be bothered with the hassle of having to take one all the way from Ireland!
Anyone know of any handy places in Barcelona that would sort me out?

Quick Google search brought this up...

http://www.qype.co.uk/es511-barcelona/cate...ps-in-barcelona

Also if you are in a big group then place all your tents in a circle and put a huge sheet over them. Tie off the sheet on the top of each tent to hold in place.

Bingo, bongo a nice shady area that shouldn't be too warm.
