Will either be taking the D40 or D90, depending on if Paul's bought the D40 by then, along with a 17-70mm and a 70-200mm.

May treat myself to a Gorillapod before the fest too. I saw someone using one last year and the pics they were getting were awesome.

For camera bags (or indeed any other bag), I'd go with Crumpler (I'm taking my Muffin Top).
http://www.crumpler.co.uk/
Crumpler bags look fantastic but they're extremely expensive.  They don't seem to have that much room for gear either -- the largest muffin top looks like it's got enough room for camera equipment but doesn't seem to have much else.  The backpacks are mostly pictured with camera bodies without lenses attached, which I find worrying.

Storm: I look forward to receiving an education on the merits of Crumplers!

thinking about renting a flash too as i dont have a proper one - just the built in piece of rubbish on the 400d...
I'm not taking any of my flashes (except the on-board one, obv) because there are very few ceilings to bounce on and there's no way I'm going to piss about with umbrellas.  That said, my piece of advice to anyone with a DSLR is to get a flash -- the one thing that regularly amazes people is how good the light from a bounced flash looks.  When you're using TTL they're incredibly easy, too.

because theyre built like tanks.  serious waterproofing, tons of padding, seriously strong strap.  You dont have to worry bout drunken fools spilling their pint over you, is superb.

i'v just bought a nikon d90, bit scared of taking it to be honest, would NEVER forgive myself if it got stolen or lost.
also got an oldish fuji S2,  but its semi broken (long story) so wouldn't get as good shots, also means bringing my only lens, a 17-70 or something sigma.... hmmm...

I think the rule about not taking anything you couldn't replace stands.

I've never got anywhere near losing a DSLR, although you never know how close you've come to having one stolen until it's gone.    I've come close to losing compact cameras on several occasions, going as far as actually losing one at Glasto 2007.  I think I tend to be much more aware of my DSLR -- compact cameras are very easy to put down and forget when you're wasted.

yep, a Nikon D40 and 18/200VR and 35mm/f1.8.

If the weather's nice (sure it will be!) it'll be loose on my shoulder just about all the time with a small lowpro lens bag on my belt  which I can just about squeeze the 18-200 into while I'm using the 35mm (which probably won't be that often tbh).

If the weather's bad I'll put a coat on, and, as per every year since I've been going - I'm thinking about taking a tripod :D

I'm definitely taking my D40. I had this conversation with my mother the first year I took it (2007), and as she wisely pointed out, "What's the point in having it if you don't use it...".

There is so much to take photos of at Glasto that I'd feel silly not to. I'll take two lenses, a 55-200 and then one of my others. I was going to take a nice long range lense like last year but now people are talking about hiring wide angles, I'm tempted... I'll be leaving the flash at home though - just not enough opportunity to use it to make it worth the extra weight.

It'll all be wrapped up in a lovely Crumpler bag. It survived 2007 covered in mud on the outside without a dot on the inside, great to just grab the camera out of and plenty of room for bits and bobs. I also make the people I'm with carry it if it's getting heavy - hey, they're getting the photos too :D

Unfortunately, I'm just not a very good photographer, haha, so I might spend the next couple of weeks trying to get a bit better for some classy festi shots. I'm going to lash it in the lockups for a bit though, because I do sometimes feel like I'm not participating as much as I'd like to.

As I have said before in this thread, I currently have a Lumix TZ4 but really miss my DSLR camera - should I buy one for Glasto and sell my TZ4 or will it do? Are compacts any good at Glasto?

Which DSLR is cheap but of a good enough quality?

HELP!!!!

These days, for the most part - it ain't the camera, it's the lens.

You can stick a Canon pro L lens on a £350 camera and get a pretty darn good picture.

You can take a £2500 semi-pro body and put a crappy kit lens on it and voila - mediocrity.

Most discussions on this thread are about some compromise of the above with portability and risk.

All that being said, the entry level Canons (500D/1000D) and Nikons (D5000) take better pictures, even with the kit lens, than a lot of the enthusiast-level ones would have just a few years ago. They're not build to take a pounding or be out in the rain though, so you'd have to be gentle with them.

if you are going to get a DSLR
Pentax K10d/20d is amazing quality and value. Weatherproof(ish) can stand a small sprays of water. Low price and can use old film lenses which cost nothing. Got a 50mm f2 inc postage for £7.

Edit: my post made me sound like an idiot : )
check flickr for groups about specific cameras for pros and cons

Compacts are great at Glasto!  I didn't have my DSLR on Sunday last year and I really enjoyed the freedom of wandering around with my camera in my pocket, not having to pull my camera out of my bag each time.

As to which DSLR, even as a Nikon fan-boy I'd say avoid the entry level Nikons at the moment -- they're too expensive for what you get.  IMO, entry-level Canons are much better value.

Ain't it? Even a fairly ancient body will do good on proper glass. I ran some test prints on my spare (a 350) and at 30" x 20" it was still more detail than the eye really needed for that size.

Only prob for a festival... good glass = big and heavy! If you see a lop-sided bloke around TC, that'll be me.

What he said!
I've had all kind of mishaps with my Crumplers, and nothing has ever happened to the contents...

They're also a lot more spacious than you'd think.
I was initially a bit retiscent re the price, but you seriously do get what you pay for.

I got my D90 last year, just after it came out.
I was scared to even look at it, let alone take it out in "weather"!

I'd never forgive myself (neither would my bank) if I lost it or got it stolen...  However... I think I'm going to take it.  We'll see how I feel closer to the time, with the weather forecasts an' all...

I have no idea.  I think it's either Large or Medium... I got it as a freebie in the sale!  :D

But you just keep unzipping bits, and popping pieces of velcro, and there are just more and more and more compartments...  At one point, I thought I was going to get sucked right into it, perhaps to another dimension..

Certainly enough room for passport, ID, travel documents, tickets, compact camera, MP3 player, USB stick, phone1, phone2...  Obviously, stuffing it that full would scupper its sleekness, but it's nice to know I have the option...  B)
