sorry if this has already been discussed but i just wonder people's opinions on gazebo's in the camping fields? obviously a lot of people do it and people on here hav suggested it, but i've also heard views against them too for taking up valuable camping space, especially in the popular fields. it's also boo-booed on the official site.
what's the general consensus on here about them? a handy bit of kit, or a selfish annoyance?

Oh no no no, I'm too tight-fisted a git to leave a sweet wrapper behind, let alone a £20 gazebo I just bought. In fact, some gits robbed my chairs on the sunday evening in 07, after I had my camera nicked so i was ultra-pissed off, so monday morning, bagged myself two brand new recliner chairs that somebody left behind.

its an old debate, but will I'm sure continue...
as long as
1. they get taken home again
2. are not silly marquee sized
3. pitched amoungst a group to give a communal area ( and pace to watch those crazy storms)
.. I don't see a problem -
our group has shared one for the last few years - and met some bizarre and wonderful people who have stopped for a chat underneath it ( especially those lovely 'dancing cow' guys last year).
I accept it has connotations of middle class smugness and champagne swigging types taking over the festival- but not amoungst all that mud !!!

Personally I think if you've got a group of friends and it's going to rain then it's an absolute must. We wouldn't live without ours and there's 18 of us this year so we may even have 2.
BUT....
* Try not to take up any more space than you would have done anyway (we do this by putting it over where our campfire is between our tents)
* Take it home with you
* Take one that's proportionate to the number of people in your group.

My group also had frequent visitors under our gazebo last year which made for a much better community feel amongst our campsite. We shared a fire, stories, cider, and shelter from the rain on Thursday night....and after a few days of people falling over the ropes holding it down there wasn't much to do to dismantle it on Monday morning!

I've never taken one but I've stood under plenty when it's pissing it down. Also handy to help find your tent. Must be annoying when the wind gets up and one lands on your tent though.

We take a 3 metre square concertina fold out gazebo - bought for about £60 from Argos a few years ago. Much more robust than the push poles together type. Forms the central point of our encampment, surrounded by five tents.
Great to shelter from sun we are going to have this year (or rain in past).
Always take away everything and clean and store for next fest.
I've done site cleanups at other fests and am always horrified by the amount that gets left behind. Lazy slobs who buy cheap tents from ASDA for a tenner and can't be bothered to pack them up and take them home.
We finger pick our encampment and won't even leave a fag end let alone a tent peg when we go.
Maybe if everyone attendeing had to do a 15 minute litter pick during the fest it would make them think twice before dropping anything.

My thoughts:
Gazebos are fine, just as long as people expect to have visitors/ passers by.
,
My pet hate is the people that put up Gazebos in the middle of tents, and then ring the whole thing off with that dumb stupid tape, and try to force people to walk all the way round the whole thing.
By all means utilise space well in the centre of a camp with Gazebos, but remember that doesnt mean you then own the land that they are standing on !
Now on to the tape, if anybody sees any anywhere do us all a favour and rip it down and put it in the nearest bin !

We use our gazebo to lure people in for tequila, free sunglasses and fancy dress, last time we kept one guy for two days.....

Gazebo's is a yay for me. It means you can sit outside having a chat and beer if the heavens do open. But you must clear them up afterwards.

i like the idea of having visitors - that doesn't sound like a negative point to me. the more the merrier.
we'll be camping in penards hill, will this area be too busy for a gazebo? (arriving first thing Wednesday morning)

COMPLETLEY agree with you on this one! Gazebos are great, but dont moan about visitors, and dont corden them off with tape or that horrible orange fence stuff (friend of mine sliced her hand on some of that stuff one year after following the perimetre back to her tent.
Also tie your gazebos down properly! They will blow away, along with the girls who are trying to keep it tied down even if it isnt their's, while a group of robost men look on and laugh

Whilst we are not proud of it (we were estremely drunk) we set fire to one at Reading a few years back.
It was in the way of everyone, had loads of tape round it and some idiot had put metal wire round the edges of it to keep people out. Plus the people were assholes!
Looking back it was perhaps a bit foolish but t got one hell of cheer in the campsite lol
