Take a look at Download and you can rule out the Prodigy ;)

I wouldn't call The Pprodigy exclusive to Download considering there playing IOW and Rockness that same weekend and also Global Gathering in July...its about time they played Reading anyway considering last appearance was way back in 2002 and almost resulted in the end of the band..so hopefully they would come back to make up for their bad 1998 and 2002 performances

They were 2nd in 2003, they have had 2 popular albums and BYOB (hugely popular single) since then, and more and more people have begun to like them...

Morrisey has also had succesfull singles and albums since 2nd headlining. So have kaiser chiefs but neither of them would move up the bill. You have to get to a certain level of popularity for the headline slot and soad never got there and i dont think they ever will.  I have loads of friends not really in to indie/rock who have heard of smashing pumpkins and rage agsint the machine but wouldnt have heard of soad as they never really got the publicity here.

Im not sure you listened to my argument. I probably have more friends that like soad over smashing pumpkins too but out of friends who arent really into music they are more likely to have heard of smashing pumpkins than soad as they have had more publicity and hype partly because they have sold more records in both the uk and worldwide. I am not criticising soad at all but realistically can anyone think of anyone at soad level of popularity who have headlined the festival in recent years. The only one that comes to mind is the pixies but they were probably a special case. I can howver think of a few 2nd headliners who are more popular yet havent headlined the festival. If a band like kc cant headline who have sold far more than soad in this country then how can soad headline, especially as they are only suited to the sunday which is genreally the "legend" day. I quite like the band but legends is a bit stretching it.

i read what you said.

So ill repeat myself.

I have friends (who arent into indie at all) who like SOAD.
I have no friends who like smashing pumpkins.

I have more friends, in any group, that know who System of a Down are than Smashing Pumpkins.

So go figure.

So is your point that soad are as popular as smashing pumpkins or just that your friends opinions devaite from the norm more than mine do? Surely you dont think system of a down are as well known in this country (or worldwide) as smashing pumpkins? I know most things people say are subjective but i really think between these 2 bands there is a comfortbale gulf. I

I dont, in this country smashing pumpkins never fully made it. Their album sales were considerably weaker when compared to System of a Downs and if you believe that the current reading demographic is 18-24 then System of a Down comfortably trump Smashing Pumpkins in terms of popularity.

We must be using different stats, admitely mine is wikipedia so always a bit of a risk! Smashing pumpkins haave had 4 top 5 albums and 6 top 20 singles. SOAD have had 1 top 5 album and 0 top 20 singles.  The last smashing pumpkins album charted higher than the last soad album.  There is nothing in these stats to suggest sp never made it or their album sales were considerbaly weaker. To headline the festival you either have had to have sold a shitload of records in the uk or be musaical legends (usually also having sold shitloads of albums). I would say kaiser chiefs, offspring and morrisey are all closer to headlning popularity than soad.  Again if someone can name me a band with comparbale uk record sales o soad who have headlined in recent years i may change my mind but other than pixies i cant. To be honest neither will headline this year or probably ever again so probaly wrong place for discussion.

Yes rage were the one that came to mind as a band that didnt chart massively in the uk but i suspect they are a band whos old albums have contiued to sell after release. They have always had this huge hype around them. I dont think a soad reunion could generate that hype. Hey very few reunions could.

Thought those were your predictions for a second :D

Not really "aware" of a lot of the bands that will probably end up on the bill so if my choices are a little out dated its cos the bands I mention were the "next big thing" last time I was paying attention!

Reading

Friday

Kings of Leon
Lostprophets
Maximo Park
Pancake at the Disco
Reel Big Fish
Eagles of Death Metal

NME
Fall Out Boy
The Rakes
Paramore

Lock Up
Rise Against

Saturday

Arctic Monkeys
Kaiser Chiefs
The View
Pendulum
The Rifles
Lethal Bizzle

NME
Janes Addiction
Black Stone Cherry
Airbourne

Lock Up
Sum 41

Sunday

Radiohead
The Offspring
Flaming Lips
NOFX
Bowling For Soup
36 Crazyfists

NME
Glasvegas
Friendly Fires
Florence and the Machine

In case it wasn't obvious, a lot of that is what I'm hoping for rather than what I expect!

Maybe I'm being daft, but did you mean to leave pendulum on the list of obviously shite bands?

Yup, maybe setting myself up for a slating here, but to me they're just as bad as the rest.

Actually, I've never seen them live, and I hear a lot of good things, so I'll withdraw that till after

Worse. At least Arctic Monkeys do what they do well, even if what they do is pretty boring.
