I too think this is a valid criticism.

I don't see what he could have done other than tell the story he told though. Surely throwing in some truly contrived shit and damaging the time line would have been ridiculous?!

I just wish I saw more of Anakin and Obi-Wan, as friends, as I always thought that was the most interesting aspect of the side of the prequels. I think that should have been the focus from the very start as opposed to the political white noise that just got in the way. Their relationship was pretty forced, it wasn't very believable. Lucas could have just been ruthless and stopped dicking about with characters like Qui Gonn and Jar Jar and should have spent that time getting Anakin and Obi-Wan up to speed as swashbuckling Jedi buddies so that we actually give a damn when Anakin turns evil.

And/or just have them as good friends from the very beginning and have some consistency in the core cast through the three films. The timeline jumps randomly in the prequels from 1 to 2, wheras the originals felt like one continuuing story arc. Just little things like that would have been nice.

*shrugs*

But then this is left to your imagination and so not destroyed.

Have you seen the cartoon series? That's all about Anakin and Obi-Wan.

I think people expected far to much.  Expected far more than the original films did.  If you look at the original films they where hardly the most amazing complex stories where they.  Neither was the acting fantastic..

Indeed.

They warrant criticism I think. Like most things. But not to the extent that they usually get. You take away the merit when you do that. Darth Maul rules!

The Phantom Menace was poor and diluted the original trilogy, parts two and three continued this.  In fact, it started when the special editions of the original came out.

Watched I, II, IV, V and VI on tv recently and only the original stood up.  The others where just a massive CGI headache or dull (the Jedi training sequence in Empire... drags and drags, and the Emperor appears to be trying to bore luke to death in the closing stages of Jedi

The original is the best and is the only one that still manages to be a good film.

I'll stick with Indy.

A New Hope is the worst of the original three. With ease.

The original 3 are in my top 10 of all time - bloody love them.

I would say PARTS of the new trilogy are too.  The Darth Maul v Obi Wan fight is IMMENSE - really enjoyed that bit.

Like all the originals, the new trilogy just buggered about with the latest technology (like it or not, it looks tremendous) and had a far-fetched fantasy storyline in the foreground.  That's why I love the franchise.

I could watch any of the 6 films right now, and enjoy them all.  In my opinion, I rate them from best to worst as follows:

5
4
6
3
1
2

HOWEVER - I think the best Star Wars story ever is the AMAZING Knights Of The Old Republic - how I'd love them to make that into a film - one of the best plot twists ever, and a FIT female Jedi.  I never finished KOTOR 2, but the original is sheer class.

Absolutely - I put 2 last, but it's still a cracking film!!

Another Star Wars game with a great storyline - The Force Unleashed.  Ties up the gap between episodes 3 and 4 very nicely indeed.

You can find fault with any of the six, Episode 2 being the guiltiest party IMO. However, Lucas’ constant tinkering with the films is a total disgrace. He should be strung up by the bollox for changing the music at the end of Return of the Jedi. By the bollox.

I find that peculiar too. I am a huge fan of Soundgarden. However, Chris Cornell's recent body of work is lost on me. I would go so far as to say that he's somewhat lost or doesn't really care. But I have no desire to call him a disgrace. It's up to him. His artistry is his, not mine. I'm just a consumer. I choose what I consume. I don't have an investment in the creative process just because I consumed someone's original concept. I have an opinion and a critical view, expectation even, but I don't have an investment. He doesn't owe me anything. Same with Lucas.

Han not shooting first is far worse.

He did leave in the stormtrooper banging his head on the door though in fairness.

No way! Return of the Jedi is little more than a lazy re-tread of A New Hope with better special effects.
How can anything with the f**king ewoks in it and the emperors 56-part speech about Luke joining the 'daaaaaaaark siiiiiiide' be better than anything?

A New Hope is fast, exciting and unpretentious, Empire is grand but plodding and Jedi is a special effects showpiece.  yet they still manage to be better than parts I-III :D

If you had a Latin teacher like I did, you would find any dialogue that Palpatine comes out with utterly, utterly terrifying.

Interesting opinion.

A New Hope is dull as piss featuring a horrible ending. Darth Vader is out of control and just seems to be the lead Storm Trooper. There's no Emperor. There's no Yoda. The Death Star run is rubbish. It takes a week to get from the Rebel ship to Mos Eisley. Having said that it is good.

Ewoks are shite, true. But the battle and the Emperor dialogue is class. Especially at the time - better than the other fantasy releases. And Jabba's Palace is really good.

However, neither compare to Empire Strikes Back.

Well then we have no right in having a pop at the recent 3 movies surely? Or any piece of film, music ever??!!

Its one thing releasing new films but pricking about with the old ones after 25 years is a bit much.

P.S. Hanging him by the bollox is a bit extreme granted!

:D
