It seems weird that they are making a new spiderman but I can see why they are doing. It's mainly because Marvel have seen how well DC have done with Batman/The Dark Knight. Tbh The dark knight in my opinion is the best superhero film ever and I'm sure a lot would agree. I can't wait for Spiderman though. It looks great and it's good that Andrew Garfield can act. Toby McGuire was shocking.
I like McGuire as an actor - it's just that he was cast as 1960's Peter Parker. Fair enough, Sam Raimi was a fan of that version, he's the director, he gets to choose that. But the problem for me seemed to stem from the difference between Peter's old fashioned movie mindset and the setting of contemporary New York. All the characters seemed cartoony, which is still entirely valid, fair enough.
For me, Peter Parker is far more like Marty McFly in Back To The Future, even Kick-Ass was more like Peter Parker currently is and this new one looks like it is going for that kind of tone.
The crucial thing with Spider-Man is you have to buy Peter Parker as a realistic character first, the whole premise rests on the idea that he was an average human being from this world - not an alien from a dying planet, or a rich billionaire or an Amazonian Princess. If he seems entirely fictional from the outset it removes the impact of his superheroics.
They are just copying the Dark Knight template, which is painfully obvious (start with lesser known villains to make it feel fresh while saving the revised arch villains for a later installment). Even down to the crafting his own gadgets and by the looks of it his suit is going to have a "realistic" explanation explaining why it looks less like a garment he created and more like something that he bought in a sports shop and stitched together. What's the bet that there will be something like in Begins where Pete tries to fight crime in more regular-looking sports clothes and finds problems with it (like it gets snagged on something because it's baggy) where he decides he needs something more suitable? Raimi's Spidey costume, as loyal as it was, was daft because, unlike Superman who wears a Kryptonian uniform or Batman who can afford a proper costume, Spider-Man is meant to be a poor kid, with nothing.
And, there's always a chance that Ifans' Curt Conners will be back as a recurring character like in the comics where he becomes Pete's confidant and helps him out with with science-based problems (which bring me hope that Venom and Doc Ock are on the horizon - Venom is highly likely considerring Pete's parents are a big deal in this new film)
