A preemptive bollocking from the council might’ve twisted their arm though

The council isn't making assessments or dishing out bollockings based on social media posts about theoretical timeslots. If it's in the licence application that the stage is open at that time, then GFL can book whoever they like in whatever slot. A bollocking comes later IF there has been a problem.

No... they actually posted 'first ever live headliner on a thursday' so I'd say it's clear they realised the roadblock / danger implications.

Faithless clearly moved after they realised what a shitshow a Thursday set would be with little competition

I highly doubt that. They don't need a Faithless social media post to realise that it would be bedlam.

Looking at their recent Festival setlists and taken into account new songs I expect they will have the top 14 and then 2 from the lower list and then maybe 1/2 newer/random ones.

    Terrible Love
    Mr. November
    Bloodbuzz Ohio
    England
    Eucalyptus
    Fake Empire
    Graceless
    Tropic Morning News
The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness
    I Need My Girl
    Don't Swallow the Cap
    Slow Show
    Day I Die
    Light Years

    Alien
    About Today
    Pink Rabbits
    Weird Goodbyes
    Mistaken For Strangers

Not sure how you worked it out, but I would expect a couple more from the recent albums, like Space Invader and Smoke Detector.

A lot of EVs dont move if they run out of battery. Cant be pushed or towed. Stuck in gear/park. Wouldnt fancy that at Glasto

    In the mud.

Not true, most, if not all, have a tow/transport mode, which releases the gear/electric handbrake, and is run from the 12V battery.

Not much different to a modern ICE car with electric handbrake that runs out of petrol/diesel.

Really interested in why everyone thinks this is such a disaster placing for them. All My Friends has the potential to win over a field full of disinteresteds for an unexpected 'moment', surely? Die hards can be at the front unbothered, everyone else can remains seated on their camping chairs, until, surprise, they realise how awesome this band is.

Am I just an eternal optimist?

Agreed. This was how it was for The National from friends who didn't know them before hand. Awesome might be a stretch, but they enjoyed it, whereas I (and people on here) weren't that impressed by it, given that we know what they're capable of.

I imagine it will be the same here. A 1hr set in the daylight with fans saying "it was fine, could have been better", and people that don't know them thinking it was pretty good and maybe checking them out further.

LCD/their agent probably specifically wanted to play the Pyramid too, to reach a wider audience. Placements are agreed in advance, especially with acts this size, so it's not as if they've realised they're subbing the PYramid, and not headlining Other again/Woddsies, and thought "oh sh*t, what a disaster placement"......

  6. A Maxi Jazz-less Faithless isn't playing the Pyramid on Thursday.

Even if he was still a) alive, and b) in the band, they still wouldn't be playing the Pyramid on Thursday.

  7. Zero chance they're playing the Pyramid on Thursday. They may be headlining a stage on Thursday. They can try spin tht as headlining the festival on Thursday if they want.

And Maxi Jazz left the band in 2016, they've been performing without him for several years....

    Sunday night looking dire...

    Worst clashes for me.

The National / Justice / James Blake / London Grammar

The National would 100% get the nod, but James Blakes new album is excellent and back to his electronic/post-dubstep stuff. Justice at WH last time was excellent, and London Grammar do a good show, albeit not enough to put above the others.

Idles should draw a decent crowd. Fontaines may pull a few thousand away from them. There will be a good chunk of folks making the Pyramid to Other stumble for LCD into Idles.

I think you'll have far more going from LCD to Jamie XX or Jungle, tbh.

    f**k me that’s underwhelming isn’t it?

Thoughts and prayers to anyone trying to find a decent Saturday night option, it’s a wasteland not seen since Sunday 2014.

LCD and Simz in the worst possible slots for acts of their talent.

Coldplay actually looking like a viable option, given the other choices.

Not just big in Asia, second biggest selling artist worldwide after TayTay last year

With those sort of streaming numbers, surely they're actually headlining the Pyramid. Maybe Coldplay could do the sunset slot on the Pyramid, eh?!

You’d say SZA was headlining Other and IDLES Woodsies, but both got bumped when Madge/Stevie didn’t happen.

    Would make sense.

Yep, up until 3 weeks ago SZA was heavily rumoured for Other, and there's no way Idles were first choice for Other headliner. I like them but that will be a tiny crowd. Jamie xx will probably pull a much bigger crowd at the same time on Woodsies.

I know the line up has a Giedie Prime vibe coming off it right now, bit if Keane genuinely do wind up taking up prime real estate on the Pyramid in the year of our lord 2024....

Have you never seen a Pyramid stage lineup before?

Keane are exactly the type of inoffensive rubbish that will be all over it, and has been for 20+ years.....

How sure are we about SZA headlining the Pyramid? If I'm correct we only have 1 source pretending this, right?

I'm nog buying it. She has had a LOT of streams recently, but I suppose the vast majority of them comes from the US. She's really not well known in UK or Europe by the average music lover. Just look at the other festivals she's playing in Europe this summer: small ones (We Love Green, Primavera Porto) or mid-sized (Primavera Barcelona). Primavera festivals target a specific market of alternative music fans, a totally different approach than Glasto that targets a way bigger, more diverse audience.

Not only is she as a person/artist completely unknown to the average Brit/European, even her songs with >1 billion streams didn't have a lot of airplay on radio stations etc. (I'm Belgian, maybe in the UK she had more airplay).

She has 0 festival anthems. Looking at the previous years, that 's a big box to check to headline the Pyramid. Even Lana, who is also really big in terms of streaming and who is headlining other big European festivals, played the Other last year. And on top: for what I know SZA doesn't have a stunning live reputation.

So... I really doubt Emily has booked het for Pyramid closing act. Would be a perfect Other headliner, tho. And I'd take her over other rumours as KoL any day. But no, as long as there's no announcement, I don't believe this rumour. Field would be historically empty & BBC won't have a lot of viewers.

Would agree with most of what you say, but at this point, she's one of the only possibilities left.

Three weeks ago most people were predicting her for Other headliner. Now lots of people have decided that she's actually big enough to headline. Nothing about SZA has changed, just the possibilities of who could headline has changed, so there's some mental gymnastics going on to justify it.

She's certainly big in the US which accounts for her massive streaming numbers, and has a large fanbase in the UK, but neither are well represented at Glastonbury.

I'd say it's quite possible that she was originally penciled in as Other stage headliner, and after Madonna and Stevie Wonder fell through, they're bumping her up to headliner.

It's a weak headliner, and unless the demographics of Glastonbury have significantly changed this year, it's going to be a very small Pyramid headliner crowd, but at this stage, it's most likely that she's headlining.

I'm sure there'll be criticism from a huge amount of people given that she isn't a big name, but Emily can point towards giving a new act (especially a female POC) a leg up to headliner status, and get good PR.

If we’re going down the route of it being a ‘surprise’, Ariana Grande has to be in the conversation. New album out & she’s the sort of artist that could drop last minute tour plans and still sell them out instantly.

(I think it’ll be SZA, just putting another name out there that is female & possible)

I did think about Grande last week, but there's a few interviews where she doesn't seem to want to tour at the moment. You'd think if there were tour dates lined up, she'd give some positive inclination towards performing live, even without giving specifics.

Two others in the same vein that could drop in from nowhere:

Lady Gaga - no tour dates, but has plenty of hits and would probably put on a good show. Have a vague recollection she posted something in a studio a few months back, but pretty unlikely.

Katy Perry - has a random gig in Brazil in September, but nothing else for the year. Plenty of mainstream hits, and would probably do a good headline show, but played 3rd down in 2017 and hasn't done anything to get bumped up.

    Another long-shot that is touring:

Pink - playing Liverpool on Friday and Saturday, but has no 3-night runs whatsoever on her tour, so pretty unlikely too.

Well, exactly - but I feel like that song got way more radio play than (e.g.) Price of Gas. Although I've got no real concept of how well-known Bloc Party even are outside of my bubble so maybe I'm being unfair.

Flux was a single, so of course it got way more radio play than album track Price of Gasoline.

That said, I do get your point. I'd much rather a setlist with 7 or 8 tracks from Silent Alarm and a few other* singles like Flux/The Prayer/Hunting For Witches/One More Chance/One Month Off, than the full 13 Silent Alarm tracks. They've toured Silent Alarm in full twice now. Just play the bangers at a festival.

*no singles from the last 3 albums plz

E: I thought people were talking about opening Other. A standard Woodsies set billed as SA in full is fine I guess. Would still prefer a mix for a secret set/Other opener.

Yes, but that seemed like a bit of a reluctant announcement, possibly rushed due to covid rapidly taking hold.

Not been on the glasto forums in a while, when this week do we think to expect the lineup?

2019, 2022 and 2023 were all announced early on a Friday morning, so I'd say Friday most likely.

Gossip headlining Woodsies is weak as piss - thought they’d be subbing at best or possibly lower. Not doing much to shake the Glastobudget shouts.

Was kind of expecting The Smile to skip it so that’s not too surprising.

Gossip playing a bizarrely large outdoor gig here in Dublin. Whoever their booking agent is clearly doing a good job at getting them the biggest gigs possible. Might not be so good when they play to piss-poor crowds, but they'll already have their money at that point I guess.....

BST sales will give some indication of the demand

    Not really.

The demographic that go to a SZA concert are much smaller contingent at Glastonbury, in my experience of both.

Is Raye not a more likely headliner than SZA? Where is the SZA info coming from?

I can only imagine Raye cant do it... SZA is a strange choice

I think SZA is a weak headliner and Glastonbury audience isn't remotely her usual fanbase (based on audience at her gig that I went to), but she's still multiples bigger than Raye.
