I don't mind Slipknot, but the majority of their fanbase does annoy me, esp the ones who try to look alternative by wearing the stupidest things posible to find.

And even worse when they think Slipknot are death metal or gothic.

hehe slipknot make me giggle, specially their ikle followers, u know the type, slipknot hoodie & baggie jeans and the linkin park cap.................mmm veeeery tastefull! biggrin.gif

I'm glad you all feel the need to catogorise them (townies), i call them people. quiet personally the "fashionable" clothes comment pisses me off as well, seen as though the Alternative scene is being whored as fashionable at the moment so dont say that.

And is the debate between "Townies Vs. Moshers" still relevent? please i thought we grew out of that a long time ago, the only people i hear calling others townies now are indeed the very people you have come to hate the "shitty slipknot kids"

enjoy pondering your self-worth now

its not a debate of townies (or scallies as we call em) versus alternatives its an issue mainly brought on by the scally bastards.... of ppl being scared to go out of the house cos of the way they dress.......its not that scals wear fashionable clothes its that they beat anyone up who doesnt wear lacoste trackies tucked into argyle/winnie the pooh socks....i mean cmon who needs to grow up??
tongue.gif

so if u think its just angst ridden slipknot kids who go on about the townies/scallys whatever ......it aint........ its the scallys emselves who contantly feel the need to pick fights with ne1 and everyone who isnt wearing dayglo trackies and rockports they all need to grow up if u ask me

err well thats how it is round here neways
sk8anic
personally...I HATE TOWNIES...I hate everything about them, they serve no real purpose except to supply more capital to money hungry sports companies...I hate them so much.

I'm a skater, inline, not board...it pisses me off so much when people say 'skater' and think slipknot hoody and jeans with the stripe down the side...it's real frustrating but I do what I do and don't give a shit about what anyone else thinks.

we really have it bad though, we get shit from townies, and we get it worse from these 'moshers' or as we call Greebo's...
evilsod_2k
Well done Amyblue!!! You've summed it all up rather nicely!!!

I really agree with sk8anic too, "townies" generalise too much about the "alternative" crowd, i.e not knowing the difference between Sk8ters (board) and Sk8ters (in-line).
They also fail to realise the difference between mini-moshers (shitty-slipknot-kids) and US (sweaty's/greebos)!

I can't stand that attitude, it's mostly only kids that have it, but what they don't seem to realise is that you get assholes from all walks of life.

Personally I can talk to anyone despite what they like and for most people it's the same.
sk8anic
thanks evil 2k for understanding my point. I just think that townies fail to comprehend the idea of a subculture within any genre.

isn't it strange like how when you were a kid everything was simple and you could talk to anyone?...I just think that's the ugly thing about growing up.

Don't you do the same with them though?

You get narrow minded people from all walks of life you know.
sk8anic
no, I've not trying to be a bigot here or anything, but I have known townies, a lot of them and they were my friends but then we sorta grew apart and they just turned into assholes and hated on me. so it sucks.

Not sure if its the same thing, but in newcatle we have stinkin charvas with a ton of gold jewllerey and rockports and a fringe the size of a baked bean tin!
sk8anic
haha, sorta the same, they think they're so pimp....they're nothing but wiggers.
skeetfest2003
ok this is totally off the actual topic (like many of the posts) But umm alternatives (pidgeonholing sad.gif ) are much more open minded and especially where we live we make the effort to talk to everyone but let's say non-alternatives in the majority seem to take to hating the alternatives wether, shitty slipknot kids, grebos, skaters etc. I believe that the alternative genre as such is much more open minded where as with the non-alternatives only a few seem to be open to other cultures. Maybe i'm generalising too much but this is how it is from my point of view.

Shitty slipknot kids and skaters etc are not alternative though, they just think they are by all dressing the same as each other and trying to get the most extream look, it's pathetic.

As I said, you get ignorant and narrow minded people from all walks of life, it doesn't matter what you like, as long as your an ok person you can usually get on with almost anyone.
kingdai
This Phil character speaks the truth. I am sick to death of eletist "alternative" goons giving abuse to so-called "scallies". Yes, its true that it also happens the other way around to a lesser agree, but just cos you think yourself as alternative does not make you any better than your Burberry-clad neighbours. Everyone is equal!

those words were spoken like a true asshole...you see skaters as people trying to be alternative or the most extreme look? that's so f**king stupid. there's so much difference between Slipknot kids and skaters, you see skaters from whats presented to you in the media, not true, not true at all...I mean, look at Leeds fest', people think of it as all hooligans because of the riots, but that's just a minority.

I have some pic's of my skating on my site so check it: http://www.geocities.com/rollingweb/profiles.html

and there's proof we're not "elitist"...goddamnit I can't even begin to tell you where you're wrong.

No but I can tell you where you're wrong, I don't see that in the media, I see it at my local rock club, at college and down the street, and more importantly at gigs etc...

I have no problem with people who like slipknot or people who skate, just with those who streotype themselves as one of them, music is music, not a fashion accessory that you use to determine who you are, same with skating.

More importantly though it pisses me of the most when people think I'm like them just 'cause I listen to metal.
kingdai
i've said it before and i'll say it again: the Phil speaks the truth. Anyone who stereotypes themselves "I'm a skater, they're all townies, we're good, they're bad" are clearly arseholes

"there's so much difference between Slipknot kids and skaters"

what about Slipknot fans who skate?

I kind of understand your point now.

the problem I have is that people automatically think that someone wearing a Slipknot hoody or some other band like that, they think their a skater, and so in turn we get stereotyped also but we're nothing like them.

I actually know a skater who's really good and he likes slipknot but he doesn't go round advertising it across his chest. You don't have to be pasted with band merchandise to be a fan, that's the point I'm trying to make here.
The Wise Llama
as far as Slipknots concerned.. each to their own! Not a personal favourite but i'm sure there's a gazillion people out there that can't stand what I listen to.. oh what a boring place the world would be if everyone had the same opinion! wink.gif ... and as for 'townies' don't really like labelling people but there are a whole heap of assholes where I live and yes, the majority of them fall into that category! I just laugh most of the time tho, they come up with the weirdest insults..heh... I usually skate into them on the street to freak em out cool.gif
sk8anic
yeah, I must admit their insults are something to be concerned about, they have such inferior knowledge but the insults really are imaginative.

labelling people sucks, I know...if people don't know shit about you they'll just label with what they see, I don't see anyone I know from school like out of school so all they know is what they see, and someone said I was an 'art' type person...jesus, what bullshit.

If we skated into them on the street we'd get totally raped.

yes! and what about slipknot fans who can't skate but do appreciate fine wine but also quite enjoy the motivational aspect of their music while at the gym?

Will they start pretending they're on a cross trainer during Spit it Out? (you'll have to wait and see but it's quite likely)

no you are not graham, I am 37, and really appreciate how excellent slipknot are live.

In fact, they are probably the band I am looking forward to most.

You have this debate every year about the kind of people who go to see certain bands and its boring..................boring as hell...............like someone said earlier most of Slipknots fans will now be late teens to early twentys, hardly kids, and why pigeon hole someone as been a certain way cos they like a certain band, I for one will be watchin Slipknot but will probably finish my Friday by watching The Cribs, and over the weekend will prob watch RATM, The Enemy, QOTSA, The Killers, The Raconteurs, just to name a few, hardly bands that are simlilar to each other, and why ? Because like most people nowadays im not that narrow minded and have a broad musical taste.

Saw Slipknot at Reading 2000 when I was 15 and really into them, it was awesome.

Not such a keen fan now, but i'll definitely watch them this year because they're awesome live.
