the legendary rock in rio is back once again...........on the other side of the world unsure.gif

I was wondering if anybody else was considering going next year for the last weekend of may and first weekend of june -- judging by past lineups of RIR im guessing it'll have one of the best bills of all festivals, Metallica, Sting (i feel criticism coming on tongue.gif ) and "Guns and Roses" (well Roses & pals) are confirmed so far.

the official website is though, all in portugese and altavista translator dont do too much of a good job on it -- so if anyone knpws how i can get the tickets id be very grateful.
FunkyIdioteque
They'll probably sell them through wayahead eventually, thats where i got my roskilde tickets, rock in rio ones might not be on sale yet.

Hmmm my attempts at deciphering Portugese seem to be equally bad dry.gif but if the lineup continues to bulk out to be as good as previous Rock in Rios then it could be a great festival to head for this summer - hopefully better weather than we enjoy at events over here.

Have you found anything more out about tickets/travel/festival information yet?
wee_insomniac
According to NME.com, Slipknot, metallica, GN'R, and ....... Brtiney Spears!!!!

well i have been a good lil researching bunny...

1) The festival definately takes place over two weekends with what looks like no provisions during mid week -- therefore perfect opportunity for a summer holiday

2) i havent managed to find out if the festival has camping facilities, i would assume so however im not going to be using them, mainly because im not sure of how comfortable id be leaving 10days worth of stuff in a tent in a foreign country + cant really see myself learning Portugesse before the end of May therefore meaning nightimes could be a little boring

3) ive found return flights with BA, direct to Lisbon airport for £150 return from heathrow -- you can get cheaper flights however it means changing at Paris Charles de Gaulles, and i cant be arsed with all that fussing. Going down on May 28th, coming back June 7th.

4) Theres plenty of fair priced hotels in the region, staying in Lisbon is more expensive, theres just two of us going and its costing £720 for 10nights (split two ways, not each) -- you can get cheaper, im just going for something close by and its my main holiday this year so im allocating most of my funds for it.

5) The official website is: http://rockinrio-lisboa.sapo.pt -- google does a reasonable translation, but nothing precise (i.e. "Rock in River" tongue.gif )

6) Tickets are onsale March 1st -- however i dont know where to get them from, any help on that would be greatly appreciated, Neil if you know anything id be really grateful if you could post it for us

7) Lineup so far, Guns n Roses, Sting, Metallica, Britney Spears wink.gif, Charlie Brown Jnr, Slipknot -- if the previous events are anything to go by it should have the best festival lineup this year, i've read that Paul McCartney is strongly rumoured as are ACDC & somebody mentioned theres a spare date on the RHCP tour for one of the nights, although this isnt something ive looked into myself

Im booking hotel and flights next week, and im getting mighty excited too!

Is it just me that thinks it's a bit risky for Miss Spears to be performing at the same festival as GN'R, Metallica and Slipknot?

Just a thought...

Wee_Insomniac
bobby_gillespie
the same thought did cross my mind -- it appears any resident metal heads might not be too keen -- however she did perform at the event in 2001, apparantly rather successfully so it'll be interesting to see how us Europeans react -- if im completely honest im more than likely to sneek a look if nobody of any calibre is on at the same time, and if all else fails...eye candy.
wee_insomniac
True, and also there could be a 'Dap1hne and Celeste' type moment, but I think she is far too big a star for something like that to happen. But as you said, if nothing else, eye candy!

G & R, Talica! Sign me up! Where do I get tickets from? Are they on sale yet? & as its a five day thingy, is it possible to get like a week pass for every day?
bobby_gillespie
We dont know yet evil_one -- it seems that all will be revealed on March 1st -- id guess you can buy an event pass that lets you in over all the days, im hoping so anyway -- not sure how much they'll cost yet though, previous events in Rio have cost as little as £20 for a ticket but seen as Brazil is one of the worlds poorer countries and it was to encourage attendance im guessing in Lisbon its likely to be more in line with typical European festival prices -- id guess around £100 - £150 for the whole event, hope im proved wrong though!

Sorry to bother you all again. Many thanks for the info before. This is definitely something I have to go to. Ive had a scan around on the net and I just need to find out one thing (if anyone knows yet). I assume there will be a camp site, so does anyone know if this will be open for the duration eg 30 May to 5 June or will it be closing for the week in between? Cheers
Trench
Hi!

There's a rock in rio - lisbon page in english: http://rockinrio-lisboa.sapo.pt/index.html?lang=en

I'm from Portugal and i haven't heard nothing about a camp site for this festival...

The line up do far:
May 29
Peter Gabriel
Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals
Gilberto Gil (br)
Rui Veloso (pt)

May 30
Guns n' Roses
Evanescence
Charlie Brown JR (br)
Xutos & Pontapés (pt)

June 4
Metallica
Slipknot
Sepultura (br)
Moonspell (pt)
Incubus

June 5
Britney Spears
Sugababes

June 6
Sting
Alejandro Sanz
Ivete Sangalo (br)

There's also a world music stage and an eletronic tent
bobby_gillespie
the lineup for this one went chronically downhill when they announced that the music starts at 7pm every night and theres only 5 bands on each stage...yeah that sounds great? right? no.
Trench
Plus, the line-up sucks big time! dry.gif

Unfortunelly, festivals in portugal are not like yours with concerts all day...
and the bands are always the same

From all the bands confirmed for rock in rio, only britney stup (aham) spears never came to portugal...

There'll be another fest, Super Bock Super Rock on june 9, 10 and 11.
Linkin Park, Korn, Avril Lavigne... sucks
and little better, Nelly Furtado

but Pixies are coming too! biggrin.gif

I cant seem to find the official site for this on the Net. Can you let me know where I'd find more info? I was looking to go to Rock In Rio then hang around to watch Euro 2004, then I realised it wouldnt be worth it as there arent that many really good bands on the line up (not worth that much money to see Incubus, GNR and Metallica). If this one is any good, it is worth considering.

do you have tickets for any euro 2004's match?

usually, the best portuguese fest is sudoeste (southwest), in zambujeira do mar.
near the beach, in august. cool.gif
i have no idea for this year's line-up, tough!
banda are only announced almost when the fest begins... blink.gif

Unfortunately not mate. I thought until recently like all good sporting events / festivals you could get some of Ebay. But not the prices there charging for England matches at Euro 04! Looks like thats off now, but more money to go to the UK Festivals I guess. Will keep an eye on that Sudoeste festi though. Just looked it up and it has some quality line ups for the last few years (The Cure, Oasis etc.)
Trench
I've got tix for Russia-Portugal! biggrin.gif
Expensive but it would be inadmissible to miss an euro's match in my country...

Sudoeste is always on the same weekend as Benicássim, on of the top summer fests in Spain, so the line-up is (just a little) identical. We only have one big stage so we don't get all the names from Beni, just the most popular... dry.gif
Then there is a dance stage, with djs and electronic acts at night... during the afternoon it's for portuguese new bands tough it's always almost empty. The beach is the place! cool.gif

I'll post some news when they arrive, probably just near summer... ph34r.gif

Wow dude £720 is way too expensive! get yourself into a pensao, they're budget hotel, their clean, quiet very very central (like Rossio or Restauradores et circa). anyway its nearly may now so you may hv booked it already :s
