Full Version: Futures & T-Break Stages

Does anyone else think the Futures Stage and T-Break Stage should finish about 9:30pm just as all the headliners are coming on?

We saw The Rascals in Futures about 9:15 on Saturday and the tent was empty!! Not that impressive for such a great band. We also walked past the tent during Air Traffic and there were less than 50 people there - seriously!

DF always get the line-up in Futures incorrect. Glasvegas should've been headlining on Saturday and Black Kids on Sunday. That would've been the only way to get those tents full.

As for T-Break, I don't think that tent was full once all weekend. Even when Paolo Nutini was on it wasn't full!!

Either DF should get their act together or stop music on these stages before headliners.

Anyone else agree??
Ee - zy
Nope, i think bands booked to play on these stages know who they're up against and therefore won't really be discouraged by a small crowd... Also think it's nice to get into a small crowd sometimes and escape the mental main stages.

I do agree though that Glasvegas should have been headlining. Bit of a bizarre decision ... rolleyes.gif

infact its ok until he opens his mouth.

I love Glasvegas, first saw them maybe 2 years ago and thought they were great and thought they were good at T. People were saying the sound wasnt that good but i thought it was a great performance by them all the same. Apparently they've been hyped by NME, i wouldnt know the fill extent as ive never bought NME in my life but that doesnt put me off them, love their style and the songs they've produced so far.

No sarcasm, will be seeing them for the third time this year at the liquid rooms in a couple of weeks.
Lyrically they tell a great Scottish lifestyle story, everyone in Scotland can relate to what they sing about.
Manno
I felt Glasvegas should have headlined, but then I don't know how big their crowd would have been as everyone wanted to see Rage. That the real reason that The Rascals and Air Traffic had hardly any crowd.

I struggled to get into the tent for Glasvegas, like literally sneakd in, bu was right at the front for th rascals, just depends on whos headlining imo
Stuart1000
I would've gone to see Glasvegas if they were headlining.

I, too, was at the front for The Rascals despite walking in a second before they took to the stage.

Just because you dont agree dont make it not so!! I agree with him anyway, my favourite Scottish band behind Mogwai definitely. I love their sound and think their lyrics are pretty good, or at least they make sense and are more meaningful to me than most of the lyrics im hearing at the moment.

Yeah, each to their own... but I dont think Glasvegas are going to go down in history as great lyricists or cutting edge musicians.

I dont think they will either, but i still like them. A large percentage of the bands i like im sure wont be remembered 20 years down the line but so f**k. I dont read into it to much, i just like the sound they make, cant put it any simpler.
Da_J_Doc-~
Thats one of the great things about them, they split the population, you either love them or hate them but bearing in mind they are Scottish and deserve that bit more support from thir home country.
Anyone who can't relate in some way to the lyrics in Daddys Gone didn't grow up in Scotland over the last 30 years.
The fact the tent was rammed for their T appearance and their tour in September has sold out with £8 tickets changing hands on E bay for 5 times that tells me they have built up a serious fanbase.
My 3rd fave Scottish band behind B&S and TFC.
Ee - zy
I really like them too - love Geraldine. V much looking forward to seeing them for the first time this weekend!

Nah don't worry I've grown up in Scotland and am now 20. I still think of them as ridiculous playing on social problems to seem "cool".

The Clash have great lyrics about social problems, so do Propaghandi, etc and bands like that. Glasvegas are just as bad as the Enemy or stuff like that. Sam market and same type of band.
Stu Gee
Why is it that because they are singing about certain things they are 'playing' on them to seem cool. huh.gif Can a band not just sing about things without being accused of that? Anyways, id personally rather hear their lyrics than daft wee American college band's lyrics about greetin because they got stood up at the prom or hangin' at the mall for example, stuff i have no experience with or interest in.

I didn't mention any american band who sang lyrics like that though so whats your point? unsure.gif

Glasvegas over play the accent, write lyrics of a stature that I havent heard since I used to go to gigs that my high school put on, and are just a cut copy of any other band out there.

I never said you did so what is your point?

I personally dont think they are a cut copy of any other band out there which is why i listen to them i and i dont mind discussing them. See bands i dont like, i generally dont involve myself with them.

you mean you love the sound that their management have told them to have in order to get famous?
sound nothing like the band i heard 3 years ago. totally been moulded to get to the mainstream. much like my chemical romance for their last album.

Quite liked them at Kendal Calling, and I'd never really heard them before. Touch of J&MC about them, but not as good (obviously!).

They havent changed that much since i first saw them which was about 2 years ago maybe, and they were pretty unheard of then, and if they have, id imagine its no more than any other band when they are starting out. I dont even think they've been going as long as 3 years in any case. As ive said before, i dont read into it too much and over analyse it like a lot of people seem to do, i just like what i like, and i like their sound, simple as that. If people want to investigate why they sound the way they do or any other other details that are really unimportant to me that's fine, i'll just stick to listening to them and enjoying them.

The Enemy. Jesus they are bad. The boy looks about 18/19 and sings about how his town and the people in it are going to the dogs. I've always thought it sounded like his dad wrote the lyrics for him...

I prefer lyrics to have a bit of substance to them, The Enemy/Glasvegas songwriting style is completely one dimensional. They arent bands that make you think about what they are saying at all, theres no intelligence in the song writing what so ever.

ive been annoyed with them for at least 3 years by my brother. when they started they were just very happy and angry and no nonsense music. that didnt change for the next couple years.
then bam, their music becomes really moody thanks to interference and you cant escape them on the radio and tv adverts.

Yeah I remember helping my friend put on one of his gigs he does about Glasgow and looking at a few bands for it. Glasvegas was one of them and this must of been about 2 years ago or something and we both thought "these guys are absolutely terrible"

2 years later and they've gotten worse, but with the major label sponsorship.

There are hundreds of bands I would give that credit to. One of my favourite bands of all time are the Deftones – their lyrics aren’t the standard “I’ll tell it exactly how it is, so the listeners don’t need to engage their brains to work out what I'm talking about” type thing. It’s almost abstract in the way you have to truly listen to what’s being said to understand it.

In my opinion – which at the end of the day is all this comes down to, as you have rightfully pointed out – is that good lyrics are intelligently written lyrics which cause you to think about what the singer means, and can possibly be interpreted in various different ways.
Some people tread a fine line between thought-provoking and pure nonsense though. See the chilli peppers for this – most of their songs make no sense whatsoever, its just any word as long as it rhymes.

Some songwriters can capture an emotion by telling a frank upfront story, which leaves you in no doubt as to what they mean… but it takes a bit creativity to make this truly mean something. There is far too much “oh baby, I miss you, I’m on the phone, all alone…” crap going around. (I'm not quoting from Glasvegas there… obviously)

There's nothing wrong with simplicity, look at the Beatles for example. Glasvegas style of simplicity works for me as well.

Deftones have been one of my favourite bands since i was about 16 but im sure there are plenty of people out there who will listen to them and think they are rubbish. I like their lyrics, but one could be forgiven for not always knowing what they are singing about. At some points their lyrics can be so abstract that they can mean anything.

A discussion is a frank exchange of opinions and an agreement to disagree, what you have here is a castigation by some of those who dare to like something musically different from their taste.
