basically a lot of people go on about certain bands being obnoxious at glasto and upsetting certain people on these forumns - being not in the spirit of glastonbury. such as primal scream threatening everyone and bright eyes slagging off john peel. i'm just quite curious about this as it puzzles me

at bestival i saw my bloody valentine (these are one of the bands i have heard are rumouired to play) they played whatr i thought was a great set but on the penultamate song played feedback for over 10 minutes (i know this because i went to the toilet got a beer and checked out another stage and they were still doing the same feed back) and then did the last 30 seconds normally.

it really pisse all my mates off and they were slagging my bloody valentine off all weekend

I just wondered if this is one of the things that would offend at glasonbury? it it against the spirit is it ?just plain rude to the punters? what is the glasto etiqute?

personnally i like awkard bastards, i think thats one of thing that gets great music created and that sort of pissing about belongs at glastonbury and that people get a little high and mighty on the forumns about awkarfd people

ps i think bright eyes and the scream are great to and would sprint to see tehem aif they play

but... that's what MBV do!
and they're the best at doing it (maybe apart from sonic youth)
and if that doesn't float your boat just check out bilinda butcher, she's quite the hottie still

oh, and conor oberst of bright eyes later apologized for his indiscretion, i didn't see it but i saw them on the pyramid in 04 and other stage in 07 and they were fantastic both times.

My Bloody Valentine do that at every single gig; they play you made me realise and then do 17mins of one note feedbacked to shit then the last bit of the song.

When i saw them do it at the roundhouse I f**king loved it, I thought it was so wicked to hear, it just blew the shit out of any other band that play loud. Like you're whole body was shaking from the bass.

But it has recieved mixed responses from alot of people. So many people left the gig, or slagged it off afterwards. It's definately a marmite part of there live show.

At the Roundhouse when I went it was 28 minutes. At 125db - that's the equivalent of a jet taking off

As a big MBV fan, I'm not sure how well the end of You Made Me Realise would translate outdoors. One of the reasons it works indoors is because its ALL you can hear. Outdoors you probably can hear talking, other stages etc which would diminish the intensity.

I wouldn't call it offensive in the slightest. Its what they do!

edit: and bilinda is still guitar chick numero uno! wub.gif

The volume was apparently different each night, it got louder and louder. Didn't help that I was standing infront of the stacks on the left hand side though.

And it wasn't that long I don't think. I'll have to give the bootleg another listen tonight and check.

I'm pretty sure it was. Friends on other nights reported similar time lengths.

The balcony was shaking. Everyone had their fingers in their ears and wincing in pain. The conversations in the toilet queue after had a lot of "WHAT?"s in them

don't think bright eyes will plyy as i think conor oberst and the magic valley band may play as they have a new album (no idea what the supposed difference between these two bandds except that no brights songs got played when they toured - strangely the magic valley band were better live than last time conor came with bright eyes to europe. The first mystic valley band labum is not as good as any of the bright eyes album but is still pretty good and much more upbeat.

i saw MBV at roskilde last year - a lot of people left during the holocaust. but i think that's because MBV aren't as well known over there, and so it wasn't as 'expected'

didn't have my noise monitoring gear on me like the person above... tongue.gif but it was 'king loud!

i wanted to watch/listen (as they're probably in my top five favourite bands) - i was on the barrier, and even i had trouble physically withstanding that kind of noise level - i couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculously, painfully loud it was afterwards. i'm convinced kevin shields isn't human.

but yeah, like everyone else has said - it's what they do, and whether its good or bad it certainly provokes a reaction.

and plus i would listen to it twice in a row if it meant i could see the rest of the set again - amazing!

didn't realise they were rumoured for gbury

When you say feedback... you mean microphone loop high pitch / drone type feedback? That's sounds terrible, won't catch me anywhere near their gig. Although that guitarist could persuade me otherwise with one bat of her eyelids I suspect! wink.gif

its guitar noise so loud that new notes and harmonics that aren't even played, become audible.

its spectacular.

Being creative with feedback is a big part of why I love the band... ditto for Sonic Youth and Neil Young (bith of which are either confirmed or rumoured). Bring it on!

I must say, it sounds terrible! But to be fair I should reserve judgement having never heard this. Does anyone have a link to a YouTube video or mp3 that demonstrates this feedback, so I can check it out for myself? Or a song that I should Spotify?

it'll sound terrible if its not live, its the sheer volume that creates the effect.
but listen to their album Loveless, one of the best albums of all time.

100% true

and to abbathehorse;

i guess the whole reason it's such a spectacle is because short of building your own massive PA and turning everything up to 11 with all the equipment set to deafen (or standing a couple of feet from a jet engine) you can't really reproduce it at home, so yeah youtube not much use...

i won't lie, i'm probably one of their biggest fans, but it isn't particularly pleasant (hence why it's referred to as 'the holocaust') it is interesting and provoking though. i would love to see it on an outside stage... preferably a few hundred meters away this time

I was cocky at the Glasgow barrowlands gig and refused to put in ear pluggs which they were handing out for free pre-gig. Couldn't hear properly till a couple of days later! Well worth it though.

Would love to see them at Glasto, ideal JP headliners in my opinion!

This thread got my hopes up they might play.

They're not even rumoured sad.gif

Saw them play the Roundhouse, words can't even begin to describe.
