Reports say vegetarians have half the carbon footprint of their meat eating counterparts.

People go vegetarian for many different reasons but for me it's about the environment.

This year I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint at Glastonbury Festival by living by 10 Greener Festival Tips to do my part to Stop Climate Chaos.

I'm looking for 15 other meat-eaters to join me between the 25th - 29th June 2008, and try out vegetarianism.

WILL YOU JOIN ME FOR A FEW DAYS?

www.pledgebank.com/GoVegetarian OR text ‘pledge GoVegetarian’ to 60022 (in the UK only)

I'll be writing from the festival on www.GreenGuysGlobal.com, where I'll be covering the latest in green ideas and green finds. I'll also be reviewing a number of the latest green camping products for 2008 and asking people what they are doing in their lives to help reduce their carbon footprint.

You can read more about my efforts on GreenGuysGlobal and also on MySpace.

PS Ostrich, snails, aligator, usually the stranger the better for me but last year I carried out the same challenge at Glastobury, and was introduced to some amazing food.

Actually it ws pretty easy to do! Though it did cause quite a debate on these boards.... <_<

I would have joined you but i went veggie on may 5th and I would seriously recomend it to anyone, as was said it has a massive impact on your carbon footprint and is more eco freindly than giving up your 4x4, it is an excellently healthy option and vegetarians are less likely yo suffer from obesity and for me it also has the added benefit of not harming animals.

I wish all a wicked festival :(

Ooo you sod, I was gonna start a thread like this myself, but along the lines of challenging myself to go veggie for the fest (& beyond) and not with lots of tasty/useful info like what you've done. Bravo!

So sign me up, great timing. Not been veggie since 2003. Do I count therefore????

Ive been trying to go veggie for pretty much the same environmental reasons. Ive been trying since Febuary but my progress is the same as my mate whos trying to stop smoking. I'll have nothing for a week, then i'll pig out on meat for a week and repeat. I personally dont think i'll ever truely become veggie, i'll probably just cut down on meat and occasionally treat myself to a nice rare steak. I could easily go veggie for the duration of the festival though i reckon.

The reason I'm posting is NOT to start a fight about right and wrong.

While there is no doubt about our influence on the global weather, we should try to put things in the boxes they belong

Global warming: There is no doubt that the way we are living right now will affect teh globe in a bad way. But;

People in the third world are dying every day, not because of what you are eating, but because they simply don't have the resources and money to stay alive.
I had an argument with a racist once, and he said "take care of your own first, then worry about the others".
I don't agree with what he said, but how can we sit here and waste resources when people in Africa are dying of AIDS because of the catholic church's misinterpretations of a fictional book?
Of course we all need to save energy as much as possible, but the plans EU and US are agreeing on now is just a waste of money.
At the last election, Denmark's government promised us that we would reduce our co2 outlet by 25% over the next ten years. Now they have decided to join the EU plan which is worse than the one we wasw promised...

I belive that, while you can take resposibility for your own emission, we have to force the world leaders to understand that it's their responsibility too.
And that it's not OK to use your 3rd world aid budget on military engagements (as Denmark is doing right now).
Sorry if this post is difficult to read, my english is not as good as it could be...

Nothing to do with global warming but yeah I'll be joining you. Vegetarian food at Glastonbury is better than the meat option. Apart from the ostrich burgers, I'm afraid I have to have one of those.

Yes, I think that's still commendable. And some of the veggie food at Glasto is really good, so there's no real hardship.

I may join you too. I've been slowly going off meat for ages now. I used to be a vegetarian and for some silly reason gave in to a bit of bacon. I don't really eat much meat now anyway and like mentioned before the vegetarian food at Glastonbury is amazing!!!! (and don't mean to be crude but imagine the difference with regards to going to the toilet - all that meat ain't good! :) )

Being a vegetarian for three days is indeed a great start, and of course you are revealing the best secret, that veg food is often much better than meat. And as for hardship, the only hardship for me as a vegetarian of 30 years (and I have two boys who have never eaten meat and think that the mere idea is awful), it would be impossible in fact, would be the thought of eating something that has been needlessly killed simply for my 'pleasure'.

The vegetarian meals at Glastonbury are lovely, but there is no way i will ever go vegetarian I find it hard enough going to my vegetarian friends house for a few days.

I've been vegetarian for nearly 20 years and I've always found there to be a huge choice of appealing and diverse veggie grub on offer at festivals.

I'm not a veggie and I regret to say that I do rather enjoy the occasional bit of dead animal along the way but it's pretty rare (no pun intended !) in general these days TBH. Apart from a daily Welsh Oggie and bacon roll and just maybe a hog roast thingy at some point over the 5 days, I definitely tend to eat mostly veggie at Glasto that's for sure simply because it's so d@mn good Posted Image I always eat way better at Glasto than I ever do at home

mmm, not to convinced on that argument myself. I won't be giving up meat, but I only eat locally sourced organic produce anyway.

I went veggie for 5 months once. Then I had a really, really bad day at work and I ate a scotch egg.
