Emiliana Torrini vs. GLC

V Festival (Staffordshire) 2005 review

Thursday 25th August 2005

The mood in the JJB Arena is tranquil, soothing and serene. An atmospheric light douses the front of the stage where Emiliana Torrini is performing 'Lifesaver', a beautiful melodic tune from her latest album, combining the sounds of a creaking ship with a gentle classical guitar. “And it's funny how it hurts....” whispers Emiliana Torrini in her soft, relaxing Icelandic voice, which is suddenly displaced by a gruff Welshman shouting “Your mamma's got a penis!”.

Some clever soul had decided to move the JJB Arena this year and place it in direct competition from the main stage, where chav rappers Goldie Lookin' Chain were performing (if you can call it that) their hit single 'Your mama's got a penis'.

This provided an interesting combo of songs:- 'Heartstopper verses Guns don't kill people, rappers do', 'Yesterday's Hurting child' verses 'Ya Misses is a nutter' and a fusion between a song about meandering down a 'sunny road' and a song about 'fucking your girlfriend's sister'.

Of course, although highly amusing this spoiled Torrini's short set. It wasn't the first time she had played at V, but was probably the first time she had gone head to head with a gang of Welsh rappers that would have quite happily bought her fish n chips down the Mecca Bingo, if they had enough spare change.

While Torrini sang delightfully about her own problems and wanders about the world, so did GLC voicing their concerns about paying 12 quid for an Elizabeth Duke necklace bought in Argos.

If there's a DJ out there wanting to hit the big time please stay away from Torrini/GLC remixes - they really don't work!
