“This is a song from the older days” introduced The Fear of Music’s lead singer Jo Rose. Well the band look about 12 now, so I imagine the older days probably means something they wrote when they were at primary school.

The crowd hang back for this one – not wanting to get too close perhaps through fear of The Fear of Music. You couldn’t help get the impression that this group would sound so much better on record. The songs are definitely there, but they lack the punch and vitality that flows so effortlessly from a decent live band.

Some of the material sounds like a cross between Eels and Pixies but they are nowhere near as good as either. I found myself tiring off them rather quickly and was about to leave when something caught my ear and I thought I’d give them a second chance.

The band did grow in confidence and by the end of the gig they had one actually won me over. They united more for the second half of their set and Rose, who had come across shy and unable to communicate with the audience seemed to start enjoying the gig.

I left thinking they had potential but would have to work on grabbing the audiences attention earlier on if they wanted to succeed.
