The 16th Roman River Festival is a festival of music, food, film and culture. The event takes place from Thursday 17th September until Sunday 4th October 2015 at various locations in the coastal region of north-east Essex.

The festival takes place in ancient and atmospheric churches in the picturesque villages of Stoke by Nayland, Dedham, Fordham, Fingringhoe, East Mersea, Abberton and Lawford, and a Georgian townhouse in Colchester. The venues are intimate and most concerts sell out so be sure to book early to make sure of your seat.

Line-up

The event boasts over 20 concerts given by 100 musicians including Alissa Fursova - Works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Adrian Sutton and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Landscape and Echoes by Gwilym Simcock – World Premiere, Moot Points by John Furse and Graduation Toccata by Mark Bellis, New compositions by Will MicNicol and Luke Selby, New compositions by Joe Stilgoe, Messiaen and de Falla (Elena Urioste and Tom Poster’s recital), Ligeti and Barber (Britten Sinfonia), Vaughan Williams and Copland (Festival Orchestra), Frank Bridge, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten and Ivor Novello (Sally Matthews song recital), de Falla, Guastavino, Villa-Lobos, Lauro, Brouwer, Julio César Oliva, Barrios and Piazzolla (Morgan Szymanski recital), Kodaly (Colchester Chamber Choir recital), Sibelius and Neilson (Sacconi Quartet), Shostakovich and Schnittke (chamber music) an introduction to Schnittke by Tom Service, Bliss, Bridge and Duruflé, and Moliero, Piazzola, Ginastera and Villa Lobos (Sergio Tiempo).

The concerts are held in various venues around Colchester and ancient and beautiful churches along the Essex and Suffolk borders. Roman River Music also runs a schools programme in partnership with Essex Music Education Hub and with funding from Essex Community Foundation, offers opportunities for young people with the Youth Choir and Ensemble.

Ticket prices vary depending upon event with a festival pass also available. Tickets are not yet on sale.

Accommodation

Roman River Festival takes place in various villages in a beautiful coastal region of north-east Essex, with local wine and beer, smoked fish and wild scenery. There are a choice of B&Bs and places to eat in the area. The area is a few minutes drive from Colchester, within two hours drive of London and Cambridge and within an hours drive of Ipswich.
