Reading Festival reviews Tue 29th Aug 06 As I’m walking back in from the left side of the stage I notice there’s a screen outside this year for the benefit of the overflowing crowds, or for those preferring to watch in the sunshine. The Fields are the third band to show up with a female keyboardist in a row. Dare I say it for me they are also the best. With a sound aptly summed in the programme as reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and they certainly have a distinct sound and something about them. It could be the Icelandic influence and Thorunn Antonia’s vocal in a blizzard of swirling guitar noise punctuated with the staccato drumming and howling lead guitar and vocal of Nick Peill. They present all the tracks from their recent EP 4 from the Village - ‘Brittlesticks’, ‘Heretic’, ‘Isabel’ and the awesome ‘Roll Down The Hill’ plus their ‘Song For The Fields’ and ‘Not The Only One’. It’s their first festival (they haven’t been around long) and they are so happy to be here it’s infectious. If they stay this bright then surely their brand of refreshing sunlit electro-indie will be hot stuff next summer. A band likely to break it big in the next year and very likely to be in lots of people’s music collections once they put an album together. review by Scott Williams
