David Bowie

REVIEW

Thursday 19th September 2002

JULY 10TH 2002

David Bowie casually strolled onto the stage wearing his three-piece suit. The suit jacket had a chain draping from the pocket. He looked immaculate, unlike some bands that just turn up in their street clothes.

A couple of the audience members were shouting things like "We love you David.", which he found very amusing. David grabbed the microphone and in a calm friendly voice said "Hi". The audience reacted with loud screams and a round of applause.

Various questions were whizzing around in my head, questions like - Will he play any of his old material? Will it just be new material? Will it be a mixture of both old and new?

In the past he has been known to miss out his classic tracks and just focus on the new material. Luckily for the people that had made the effort to come and see him at this event, he had decided to perform a mixture of old and new tracks.

During the opening track, 'Life On Mars', it was obvious why Mr Bowie is regarded as one of the best live artists around. His voice has that rare quality of being able to send a shiver down your spine. His voice is so good live that you will think he is miming to a backing tape.

Beaming smiles were on everyone’s face as the 'thin white duke' treated us to his classic material such as 'China Girl' and 'Starman'.

Obviously Mr Bowie was going to try and promote his current album 'Heathen' as much as possible. He played 'Afraid' and '5.15 the Angels Have Gone' as well as a few other tracks from it. It was enough to convince me to go and buy the album.

David Bowie
Whether or not you like David Bowie's recorded material, you should try and catch him live because he has that rare ability to bring his songs to life. Not only that but he has that special gift to make you think that he is singing to you and no one else.

I was impressed with his entire performance. It had everything you could wish for - humour, good music, great vocals, and a good mixture of old and new tracks. He catered for everyone.
