Guilford Live 2000 review

Sat 29th Jul 00

GuilFest Guildford Live 2000

At 6pm, when the entertainment kicked off, Guildford was in the midst of a torrential downpour - so vicious that it had flooded one of the towns main road, making it impassable (abandoned cars in water 3 feet deep), and causing traffic gridlock. Luckily by 7pm it had stopped, and we were treated to a pleasant, warm evening.

The Main Stage before Terrorvision

Around the site, the toilets make us faint - not because they're disgusting, but because they're not. 10 points!

The markets are the standard range of festival food from round the globe, as well as a refreshing range of crafts and clothes.

In the Smirnoff Experience Dance Stage - a totally corporate venue, where they refuse entry to anyone carrying a different brand of drink (disgusting!), Fabio and Grooverider played to a sparse but keen crowd, while the bars dispensed the sponsors wares.

The Unsung Heroes stage, smartly placed in the centre of the site, pulls in anyone passing to checkout what's on, which for the main is raw but competently delivered.

Rolf Harris - now there's an entertainer! Despite being 70 years old, he wowed the crowd with his classics, and a few covers in his own style - weird, but wonderful!

Rolf - wobble that board

Motorhead were much as you'd expect, at the right volume, with the right energy and the right songs. At 11:05p.m. sharp, while Lemmy and gang were midway though Overkill the PA was switched off, but they finished the song with just the stage amps, and took their well deserved bows.
