Glastonbury Festival 1998 reviews

Thursday 9th July 1998

Review by: Hywel Roberts
Stage: Other
Day: Sunday

For me this was arguably the set of the festival. It's just a shame it was so early on Sunday (about 1.30 I think). The band came on to a fairly warm reception from a sizeable crowd. The DJ/vocalist started the show with a few hip hop beats and comments about getting the crowd moving. When the singer, formerly MC Tunes, joined in, I feared a repeat of the infamous purple penguin(who I saw for about 5 minutes. Believe me, it was more than enough). The undoubtably talented band started with an up beat track from their impressive debut album 'Done and Dusted'(to be honest I can't remember what it was). Thankfully the patter of the Singer was more Jarvis Cocker than Purple Penguin and the crowd had warmed to the band very quickly. They could relate to his claims of basic lifestyle, 'I love all this, me. I've got me wellies on. I've been sleeping in a field up there somewhere(pointing at a field with what seems like thousands of tents.)' The heads were rocking through the crowd, and the infectious energy of the band, who were clearly enjoying themselves, soon filtered through to all the members of the crowd, even those with the worse hangovers! This set surpassed the wildest dreams of the band. They could hardly contain their delight with comments such as 'that was brilliant. We were brilliant then, you were brilliant then it was brilliant' and 'could this be the best crowd in the world?'. With praise like that, how could the crowd do anything but love the band, which they duly did. Highlights were for me the guitarist playing a great solo with his guitar behind his head, Hendrix style. Better than this though was the drummer going for a comic run around the stage. Something I'll always remember because it was so spontaneous and funny!
