After an opening day of acts such as Deftones and Ministry, the scene was set for two rock heavyweights celebrating the old and new of rock music.
Marilyn Manson was first up. Looking like a young pretender to Iron Maidens throne, Manson burst on to the stage in front of a majestic backdrop with hidden surprises. While the Maidens have Eddie, Manson has his made up image and an array of hats. He struts around the stage a la Bruce Dickinson.
I must admit to being surprised by Manson. I had wondered if it may all be hype, but today he proved that he has got what it takes and is, above all, an excellent performer. Songs like Disposable Teens are fast becoming anthems of a generation. His version of Tainted Love sounded like it had an even heavier edge to it today.
If Manson is the pupil, Iron Maiden today proved that they are masters. With the biggest audience of the weekend, it was clear that they arent dinosaurs thriving on past glories. From the moment 666 flashed up at the back and the opening bars of Number of the Beast could be heard, the crowd were enthralled. They looked glad to be there. There is no wane of enthusiasm after all their years in the business.
They further endeared themselves to the crowd, as they announced they were going to ignore the curfew and carry on with their set. Cue some Cliff Richard baiting with Send Your Daughter to the Slaughter, and as it was always going to be, finishing on Run To The Hills.
As if to prove a point, when Eddie made his entrance, he was complete with crown. Maiden were kings of the festival. At least for Saturday. Sunday was a different proposition entirely!
